KENNESAW, Ga. - Senior Jovana Lubura (Belgrade, Serbia/New Mexico Military Institute) posted 11 kills and seven digs and sophomore Megan Healey (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) posted 10 digs to lead the USC Upstate volleyball team, but it wasn't enough to defeat Kennesaw State, as the Spartans fell, 3-1 (25-14, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17), in Atlantic Sun Conference action on Friday night.
The Spartans (6-13 overall, 3-8 A-Sun) also got 26 assists and nine digs from senior Holly Mauldin (Columbia, S.C./Irmo), nine kills from sophomore Sandra Campbell (Orlando, Fla./Pilot Point (Texas)) and eight from freshman Kelsie Queen (Blythewood, S.C./Ridge View).
Upstate tied the match at a set a piece in the second set, as freshman Morgan Thomas (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) notched a kill to tie the score at three and then freshman Jane Hawryliw (North Battleford, Sasketchewan/North Battleford) served up six straight points and two aces to put Upstate in control with a 9-3 lead. From there, Upstate extended the lead to 19-8 as Mauldin served five more points up for Upstate. KSU mounted a furious comeback, but couldn't get closer than six, as Upstate took the set, 25-19.
With the score 5-4 in favor of the Owls (3-17 overall, 2-10 A-Sun) in the first set, Kennesaw went on a 16-7 run to take a commanding 22-11 lead en route to the 25-14 win in the set, as the Owls hit a hefty .364 in the frame. In the third set, the Spartans worked back from an 8-5 deficit by posting three straight points to tie the set at nine. However, an 8-0 Owl run gave KSU a 17-9 lead, which was more than Upstate could overcome despite outscoring the Owls, 13-9 during the remainder of the set. In the final set, with the score tied at four, the Owls used a 6-1 run to take a 10-5 lead. From there, Upstate could never get closer than four points.
The Owls were led by 17 kills, 10 digs and four blocks by Chelsey Denesha, 16 kills, six digs and two blocks from Asjia Stokes and 11 kills, 10 digs and three blocks from Sabrita Gulley. Ginny Frederick posted two kills and 20 assists and Rachael Albright added 19 assists and five digs.
The Spartans get back into action on Saturday at Mercer, playing an Atlantic Sun Conference match at 3 p.m.
