Oct. 12, 2007 FORT MYERS, Fla. - The USC Upstate volleyball team got a balanced effort from sophomore Jesicah Ambrisco (Iowa City, Iowa), freshman Sandra Campbell (Orlando, Fla./Pilot Point (Texas)) and sophomore Katie Downey (Belleville, Ill./West Belleville), as each posted six kills, but it wasn't enough, as Florida Gulf Coast downed the Spartans, 3-0 (30-17, 30-19, 30-13), on Friday night at Alico Arena in Atlantic Sun Conference action. Sophomore Morgan Bucciferro (Joliet, Ill./Minooka Community) added 19 assists and junior Jenna Leslie (Houston, Texas/Westfield) posted a team-high eight digs. Ambrisco and Downey each added two kills for the Spartans (6-13 overall, 0-6 A-Sun). The Eagles (15-2 overall, 5-1 A-Sun) benefitted from 16 kills from Ana Kokanovic and 23 assists from Chandra Lefever. Roberta Santos added 11 assists, eight digs and five blocks. FGCU used a six-point service from Lefever in the first game, helping the Eagles to a 15-6 lead and never looked back en route to the win. In the second game, a kill from Downey and an Eagle attack error brought the Spartans within four at 22-18, but FGCU closed the game on an 8-1 run. In the third game, Santos served for five straight points to break the game open and lead the Eagles to the win. Upstate will close out its Florida swing of the A-Sun schedule when it travels to Stetson for a 5 p.m. game on Saturday. |
