Final Stats

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - A solid effort from freshmen Morgan Thomas (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Jane Hawryliw (North Battleford, Sasketchewan/North Battleford), who posted 32 combined kills and 20 combined digs, was and wasn't enough for the USC Upstate volleyball team on Friday at the USC Upstate Volleyball Classic, as they helped lift Upstate to a 3-0 sweep of Hampton to open the tournament before falling, 3-0, to Wofford in the nightcap at the Hodge Center.

The match against Wofford saw a school-record 927 fans enter the Hodge Center to watch collegiate volleyball. Upstate is now 2-3 on the season. Wofford is 5-2 and Hampton is 0-6.

Eight service aces and six blocks helped propel Upstate to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-14) win over Hampton in the first match of the classic. Hawryliw posted a career-high 14 kills and sophomore Sandra Campbell (Orlando, Fla./Pilot Point (Texas)) added nine kills and hit a stellar .467 in the win.

The Spartans jumped out in the first set to a 9-2 lead after eight straight points on the serve of junior Karla Andree (Cypress, Calif./Cypress C.C.). Hawryliw had four kills during the run. Upstate was able to extend the lead to 19-9 and Hampton couldn't get closer than six points the rest of the set.

In the second set, Upstate couldn't separate itself from Hampton as it took a 16-13 lead only to fall behind 19-18 on an attack error. Two kills by Thomas helped keep the set close, tying it at 20 and 21. A kill from Hawryliw and a service ace from Thomas then helped Upstate pull away en route to the 25-22 win.

Upstate fell behind 5-4 in the third set before going on a 12-3 run to take a commanding 17-8 lead. During the run, freshman Kelsie Queen (Blythewood, S.C./Ridge View) and Campbell each contributed two kills. After the Pirates came within six points, Upstate scored the final six points of the match with Thomas posting two service aces in the closing run of the 25-14 win.

Junior Morgan Bucciferro (Shorewood, Illinois/Minooka Community) had 19 assists to lead the Spartans and both Thomas and Queen posted a team-high eight digs. Thomas led the team with match-highs with four service aces and four blocks.

Aaryn Harrison had eight kills to lead the Lady Pirates and Lihi Elkayem added 14 assists. Alyssa Jackson added nine digs and both Harrison and Ebonie Vincent posted two blocks.

Both Campbell and Thomas posted double-digit kills in the nightcap against Wofford, but it wasn't enough to get past double-digit kill performances from Shanna Hughes and Stacy Byrd, as the Terriers took a 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-15) win in the crosstown rivalry.

Upstate and Wofford felt each other out in the early part of the first set in front of the record crowd, with a block from Catelyn Amende and Liz Sheets helping Wofford close within one point at 7-6. However, Upstate responded with a 5-1 run, paced by three kills from Queen, forcing a Wofford timeout. The Spartans kept the pressure on after the timeout, with a kill by Campbell extending the lead to 17-9 and forcing another Terrier timeout. After the pause, Wofford got back into the set with an 11-4 run. Upstate served for the set twice, but two kills from Hughes kept the set alive and after an Upstate attack error, Hughes clinched the set with a kill, giving Wofford the 27-25 win.

In the second set, Wofford took a 20-15 lead, but Upstate closed the gap to 23-21 after an attack error. However, it could get no closer, as another Hughes kill closed the set, 25-22, in the Terriers' favor. The teams battled evenly early in the set, with Wofford holding a slim 13-12 lead when consecutive kills by Hughes opened up a three-point lead.

A kill by senior Jovana Lubura (Belgrade, Serbia/New Mexico Military Institute) helped Upstate tie the third set at nine, but from there the Terriers went on an 11-2 run to take command of the set and take the 25-15 final set win.

Campbell led Upstate with 11 kills, hitting .364 in the match, and Thomas added 10 kills, two service aces and three blocks. Lubura added six kills, five digs and two blocks. Hawryliw had four kills, three assists, nine digs and two blocks. Queen led the squad with four blocks, adding six digs and four kills. Sophomore Megan Healey (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) posted a match-high 15 digs and Bucciferro added 30 assists.

Hughes led the Terriers with 16 kills and seven digs and Byrd added 12 kills. Brittany Thompson added 14 digs and Amende had a match-high five blocks. Joanna Suddath added a match-high 35 assists.

At 11:30 a.m., UNC Asheville faces Radford before Upstate takes the floor with Radford at 2 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., Wofford faces Hampton and Upstate closes the classic against UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.
