SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Thanks to a historic win, senior Diana Martinez wrapped up the USC Upstate women's tennis team's first Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the week award, the conference office in Macon, Ga., announced Friday. Martinez was a perfect 2-0 in singles and doubles during the week and she became the first Upstate tennis player (male or female) to reach 60 career wins with her win over Wofford's Haley Baird at No. 5 singles on Thursday. She also added an impressive double-bagel, 6-0, 6-0 win over North Carolina A&T's Danielle McCaskill at No. 4 singles last Friday. Martinez also posted two doubles wins with junior partner Maria Herrera (Buenos Aires, Argentina), helping her extend her already school record to 54 doubles wins. Martinez has a combined 114 wins at Upstate. She is currently five wins from passing Stefan Dumitrescu (2003-07), who posted a school-record 119-32 career record for the men's team. Martinez was a 2007 Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-American in the college division after posting a 22-4 singles record and a 19-6 mark in doubles for the Spartans.
