Final Stats

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior Emilia Milovanovic used a three-set win at No. 4 singles to help the USC Upstate women's tennis team clinch a 4-3 win over Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Center, helping Upstate improve to 11-3 overall and 5-2 in the A-Sun. Jacksonville fell to 6-8 overall and 2-5 in the A-Sun.

The Spartans, who were fighting several injuries, including a fever that kept sophomore Ana-Sofia Camberos out of the match, were able to win the doubles point with a pair of 8-4 wins. Freshmen Francisca Valderrama and Monica Pezzotti beat Iva Jaresova and Tatiana Soldatova at No. 1 and Cinthya Lazaro and senior Carolina Bello downed Sara Londono and Veronique Spencer at No. 3.

Upstate had to keep fighting hard in the singles portion, though, as the Dolphins won the match at No. 2 with Bello fighting hydration issues. The Spartans got a win at No. 6, though, as Lazaro notched a 6-0, 6-0 win over Fernanda Carrero, but the Dolphins retied the match with a win at No. 1.

Upstate answered, though, as Pezzotti won just her second match of the year with a 7-5, 6-2 decision at No. 3 against Jaresova and Milovanovic gritted out her three-set win over Londono, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, at No. 4 to clinch the match before Upstate fell in a superset tiebreaker at No. 5 singles to close out the match.

The win was Upstate's second straight 4-3 win over the Dolphins, also taking the narrow decision on March 29, 2009 at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

The Spartans will play Stetson in A-Sun action on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex, looking to move into third place in the conference, as the Hatters hold a half-match lead on Upstate with a 6-2 conference mark.
