Final Stats

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - With freshman Simona Cacciuttolo hampered by a hamstring injury and junior Emilia Milovanovic struggling with a shoulder injury, both gutted out a tough day on the courts, but both were perfect, as the USC Upstate women's tennis team finished its Tennessee trip with a pair of Saturday wins, beating Atlantic Sun Conference for Lipscomb, 6-1, in the morning, before beating Murray State, 6-1, in the afternoon.

Cacciuttolo won all four of her matches, including two doubles matches with partner Milovanovic, while being forced to move up in the lineup to No. 2 after an ankle sprain sidelined freshman Monica Pezzotti on Friday. Milovanovic added one singles win, helping Upstate improve to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the A-Sun.

Milovanovic also reached a couple historic marks during the matches, as she became the ninth player in school history to reach 90 career combined wins with her doubles win over Lipscomb. She is currently eighth with 92 combined wins (39 singles and 53 doubles). The win over Lipscomb also moved her into fifth place alone on the school's doubles wins chart, as she moved past Maria Herrera (2005-08), who won 51 career doubles affairs.

The Spartans started out the day with a solid 6-1 win over Lipscomb (4-7 overall, 0-2 A-Sun), despite playing without both Pezzotti and Milovanovic due to injuries. The Spartans split the doubles point, with Cacciuttolo and Milovanovic posting an 8-0 win over Carlina Jow and Julianne McMeen at No. 3 and Cinthya Lazaro and sophomore Ana-Sofia Camberos added an 8-2 win over Mackenzie Bishop and Elizabeth Keevil at No. 1.

In singles play, the Spartans took a 2-0 lead as Cacciuttolo posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Keevil. The team continued to roll as freshman Francisca Valderrama downed Bishop, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 and Bello posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Danielle Hansen to clinch the match.

Upstate then added two more wins, with Lazaro posting a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kara Jackson and Camberos added a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jow.

Playing wounded, the Spartans gave one of their most focused efforts of the season against Murray State (2-4), taking a 6-1 win for its fifth straight after posting a sweep in doubles play to keep momentum on Upstate's side. The five-match winning streak marks the fifth straight year that Upstate has won at least five matches in a row at one point and the seventh time in the last eight years.

Lazaro and Camberos posted an 8-4 win over Lyndsay Ottoson and Dina Obukhova at No. 2 and Milovanovic and Cacciuttolo downed Alexis Webb and Ashley Canty, 8-4 at No. 3 to clinch the point. Valderrama and senior Carolina Bello completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Angela McGahee and Lindsey Wiseman at No. 1.

The Spartans continued to roll in singles play, once again despite lineup changes, with Cacciuttolo gutting out a 6-0, 6-1 win over Wiseman despite her injury, Camberos posting a 6-2, 6-0 win over Obukhova at No. 6 and Lazaro adding a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ottosen at No. 5. Milovanovic, bad shoulder and all, added a 6-2, 6-3 win over Canty at No. 4 and Valderrama improved to 9-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over McGahee at No. 1 to round out Upstate's scoring.

The Spartans get back on the court on Thursday when Charleston Southern heads to the USC Upstate Tennis Complex. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
