Final Stats

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - After three weeks of postponements, the USC Upstate women's tennis team finally got to make its 2010 spring debut, doing so in style with a 5-2 win over USC Upstate, as the team, with a lineup featuring four freshmen, saw two of them with singles wins and three posting doubles wins at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex on Monday afternoon.

In doubles play, the Spartans (1-0 overall) fell in the No. 3 match, but the freshmen duo of Monica Pezzotti and Francisca Valderrama posted an 8-2 win over Paige Oelke and Heather Heusel at No. 1 and the team of freshman Simona Cacciuttolo and sophomore Ana-Sofia Camberos added an 8-4 win at No. 2 over Megan Davis and Cara Caruso to clinch the point.

The team continued its strong play in the singles portion, winning four of the six matches. Cacciuttolo started Upstate's run with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Oelke at No. 4 for her first career singles win. Camberos added a 6-2, 6-2 win over Davis at No. 5 singles and Cinthya Lazaro clinched the team's win with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Caruso at No. 3 singles. Valderrama picked up Upstate's final win at No. 2, taking a 6-2, 7-5 decision from Olivia McMillan for her first career singles win.

The Spartans are back on the courts on the road this weekend, facing off at Coastal Carolina on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Georgia Southern on Sunday at 2 p.m.
