SPARTANBURG, S.C. - USC Upstate could not jump start its offensive attack and Coastal Carolina scored goals early portion of both the first half and the second half as it defeated the Spartans, 2-0, in the final home game of the season at County University Soccer Stadium Wednesday night.
Upstate falls to 3-14-0 this season while Coastal improves its record to 12-5-1.
The Chanticleers wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard in the ninth minute when midfielder Amanda Gelsomino took a pass on the right side on a tough angle and bent a shot just inside the left post for her sixth goal of the season to give Coastal a 1-0 lead.
Upstate tried to counter and made three shots in the first half, but all of the them were wide of the net.
In the second half, the Chanticleers looked for a two-goal lead and found it in the 58th minute when defender Maegen Hellberg rebounded a shot that was saved by Upstate sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Daughtry and did not miss from point-blank range for her second goal of the year and a 2-0 lead that held up for the rest of the game.
The Spartans were outshot 20-4 in the game, 13-3 in the first half, and none of their shots were on goal. Daughtry led Upstate with seven saves and freshman forward Alyssa Roegner, freshman defender Brandi Manley, freshman midfielder Catherine Nolff and sophomore defender Santana DeFreitas each had a shot.
Coastal midfielders Anna Tupy and Sara Niles each had an assist.
Upstate will play its season-finale, an Atlantic Sun Conference match, at East Tennessee State at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.
