BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - With a relentless attacking-style of play, Gardner-Webb broke through in the second half with two goals in the last 13 mintues, and USC Upstate never got on track and fell 2-0 to the Bulldogs at Varsity Field Saturday afternoon.
Upstate falls to 3-9-0 this season, 1-5-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference play, and Gardner-Webb improves to 5-8-0, 3-3-0 in conference.
The Bulldogs pressed the issue early and often in the first half including a shot by midfielder Lindsay Gladhill that hit the post in the 17th minute for a near-goal. Spartans junior goalkeeper Samantha Spradley kept her team in the contest with five saves in the first half as the score remained 0-0 at the half.
In the second half, Upstate nearly broke through to take the lead in the 61st minute when freshman forward Charlise Cunningham had an opportunity to score by shot the ball just wide left of the goal.
Gardner-Webb's persistence paid off in the 78th minute when a corner kick by midfielder Sarah Keyser just went under the crossbar in the goal for a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs put the contest away in the 86th minute when a cross by midfielder Angie Harvey was deflected by Keyser to Gladhill, who scored from close range.
Upstate was kept in check all game long by the Gardner-Webb defenders and was outshot 22-2. Spradley, who had her streak of 196 minutes without allowing a goal snapped, led the Spartans with 11 saves.
Keyser finished with a goal and an assist to lead the Bulldogs and goalkeeper Ashley Scott made one save.
Upstate will host Kennesaw State Friday night at County University Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m.
