CHARLESTON, S.C. - USC Upstate sophomore forward Melissa Kuhar notched her first career two-goal game, including a goal in the 67th minute to tie the game at 2-2, but The Citadel forward Jessa Scott scored on a header in the 80th minute for the game-winner, giving the Bulldogs a 3-2 win over the Spartans at Washington Light Infantry Field Friday afternoon.
Upstate falls to 2-3-0 on the season and The Citadel improves to 2-6-0.
The Citadel struck first in the 12th minute when Bulldog midfielder Emily Haller scored a goal on a shot into the upper right corner for a 1-0 lead. Upstate rallied in the 42nd minute with Kuhar finding the back of the net for the third time this year on an assist by sophomore midfielder Santana DeFreitas to tie the game at 1-1.
In the second half, The Citadel retook the lead in the 62nd minute with midfielder Dianna Martin booting the ball in for a goal off a header by Scott to retake the lead at 2-1. The Spartans answered once again in the 67th minute with Kuhar once again doing the honors with a header off of a cross by freshman defender Meg Korpita for her fourth goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2.
Upstate junior forward Nicole Trawick had her four-game goal streak snapped and the first time she has not scored in a game this season. She was held to just one shot.
Korpita finished with one assist, her first career point as a Spartan, and DeFreitas notched her team-leading third assist of the season. Junior goalkeeper Samantha Spradley made six saves falls to 1-3-0 in goal this season.
Scott led the Bulldogs with a goal and an assist and goalkeeper Britni Bunnell made three saves.
