Dec. 3, 2007

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Coming off of a highly success fall season, the USC Upstate men's and women's golf programs will begin their spring season in the middle of February, announced head coach Todd Lawton in releasing the 2008 spring schedule.

The men's team had a tremendous fall season in its first season playing on the Division I level. The Spartans won the season-opening Rutgers Invitational and finished in the top five in five of the six tournaments they played. Upstate will compete in six tournaments this spring, opening the schedule Feb. 17-18 at the GODA North Texas Classic played at the Club de Santa Anita in Puerto Vallerta, Mexico.

Upstate will also play in the BSC Golf Classic (Feb. 25-26), Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic (Mar. 3-4), Samford Invitational (Mar. 10-11), Wofford Invitational (Mar. 31-Apr. 1) and Palisades Intercollegiate (Apr. 14-15).

"Our players have done an excellent job showing they can compete at the Division I level," said Lawton. "Each season we will seek to play the best competition on the best courses. The guys don't shy away from playing anyone and are eager to play against the top programs. We look forward to building rivalries with teams from our region and across the country."

Richelle Wedzik will lead the women's team next semester.

The women's team also had a strong first semester playing on the Division I level. Upstate finished in the top five in three of the five tournaments it played. The Spartans will play in five tournaments in the spring, opening the schedule Feb. 11-12 at the Baja Invitational at the Bajamar Resort in Baja, Mexico.

Upstate will also play at the Fighting Camel Classic (Feb. 25-26), Red Rock Intercollegiate (Mar. 1-2), Shamrock Invitational (Mar. 21-23) and Eastern Kentucky Invitational (Apr. 3-5).

"There is no doubt that the competition and travel in Division I women's golf is much stronger than that of Division II," said Lawton. "We are looking forward to playing a schedule that allows us to measure our efforts against great schools from across the United States. It's good for our current players and great for recruiting as well. At our best we can be very competitive, and that is our goal."

Men's Schedule Feb. 17-18 at GODA North Texas Classic (Puerta Vallerta, Mexico; North Texas); Feb. 25-26 at BSC Golf Classic (Birmingham, Ala.; Birmingham Southern); Mar. 3-4 at Lonnie D.
