Morganton, N.C. - Jennifer Judge battled her way to a first round 77 to stand in a tie for 14th to lead the USC Upstate cause as the Spartans opened play in the WCU/Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate Monday afternoon.
Judge spent the first two-thirds of the round at or under par, but gave a few strokes back coming in to post a 77 as the low Spartan in the tournament. She shot a 36 on the front nine and a 41 on the back and stands five strokes back of the lead. Wofford's Sarah Hurt shot an even-par 72 to take the lead heading into Tuesday's final round.
Upstate opened the tournament with a 335, counting scores of 77, 80, 87 and 91. In addition to Judge's 77, Cheryl Lo posted an 80, Natalie Buch turned in an 87 and Johanna Ebenhag totaled a 91. Marissa Clontz finished the first round with a 95. Lo is tied for 37th individually.
The 335 turned in by Upstate was three strokes better than the 338 turned in by The Citadel. The Spartans stand 14th in the 15-team tournament. Upstate is nine strokes out of 13th place held by Western Kentucky.
Elon opened the tournament with a 305 to take the first round lead. Host Western Carolina stands just one stroke back at 306 in second place and is followed by Appalachian State (308), William & Mary (312), Wofford (313), Jacksonville State (317), Richmond (317), Tennessee Tech (318), Gardner-Webb (318), Presbyterian (321), Radford (321), High Point (323), Western Kentucky (326), Upstate (335) and The Citadel (338).
