SPARTANBURG, S.C. - As USC Upstate prepares for the 2009-10 season, the USC Upstate Athletics Department has enhanced the coverage of Spartan teams with the development of the official Facebook fan and Twitter pages. Spartan followers with a Facebook account can become a "fan" of the Spartans and receive regular updates, including photos, video and exclusive content by logging onto USC Upstate Athletics on Facebook. In addition, fans can follow the Spartans on Twitter by logging into Upstate Spartans on Twitter and clicking on "Follow."
"We are excited that our loyal Spartan fans can now follow us on Facebook and Twitter," Bill English, assistant athletics director for communication, said. "Facebook and Twitter provide great vehicles through which we can engage our fan base, especially current Upstate students and young alumni, many of which access the sites on a daily basis.
"For some, this will become a primary source of their Spartan information. For others, the site will supplement the already thorough coverage provided through more traditional outlets including UpstateSpartans.com."
The sites also allow the athletics department an avenue through which to interact with its fan base and receive feedback, along with conducting polls, contests and offering exclusive promotional opportunities.
Founded in February 2004, Facebook is a free social utility that helps people communicate with friends and family. It features 250 million active users, more than 120 million of which log on to Facebook at least once each day. According to a recent Nielsen study, the average U.S. user spent 4.5 hours per month on Facebook in June, more time than was spent on Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL.
Twitter, a free social networking and micro-blogging service available at twitter.com, allows its users to send and read other users' updates (also known as "tweets"). Fans can receive updates on Spartan Athletics at the UpstateSpartans.com official Twitter page, on their mobile phone, via instant messaging or through e-mail. In addition, the Spartan Athletics Twitter page can be added to blogs or other social networking sites.
Fans do not need to sign up for Twitter to access the site, but to receive automatic updates, fans will need to create a Twitter account. To create a free account, simply click on the button in the upper-right corner of the page that reads, "Join Today!" By following Spartan Athletics on Twitter, fans will receive instant access to all of the latest news on the Spartans.
