SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The ninth-ranked USC Upstate men's tennis team not only received word that it has earned its sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, it also learned that Upstate will be one of two host sites for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship, announced the NCAA today.
Upstate (20-4) and fellow Peach Belt Conference school Armstrong Atlantic State will serve as host sites for the Mid-Atlantic Regional either May 3-4 or 4-6. The dates and times of competition will be released later this week. Upstate is one of six Peach Belt schools to earn an NCAA bid this season. Armstrong, USC Aiken, Augusta State, Lander, and Georgia College & State represent the Peach Belt as well, while Shaw (CIAA) and Anderson (CVAC) have also earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Upstate will open the tournament against Anderson. The winner of that match will take on the winner of the Lander-Georgia College & State contest. In the other sub-regional, Armstrong will open tournament play against Shaw, while USC Aiken and Augusta State will play each other with the winners of the first round matches meeting in the second round. The winners of each sub-regional will advance to the NCAA Nationals May 9-12 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Upstate defeated Anderson 7-2 earlier this season and took a 9-0 victory over Georgia College & State. The Spartans have battled Lander twice this season. Lander claimed a 5-4 victory in Greenwood during the regular season, but Upstate got revenge in the Peach Belt Tournament with a 5-2 victory in the semifinals.
