Final Stats

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - A singles and doubles win from both sophomore Jack Roux (Santiago, Chile/Subercaseaux) and senior Sebastian Gonzales-Orbegoso (Lima, Peru/Cambridge College) helped the USC Upstate men's tennis team snap a two-match skid, taking a 5-2 match at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans (11-5 overall, 4-1 A-Sun) took two doubles matches to earn the first point, as junior Sandy Franz (Duesseldorf, Germany/Berufskolleg Hilden) and Roux downed Danny Lee and Ervin Garibovic, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles and Gonzales-Orbegoso and junior Leandro Osorio (Quillota, Chile/Subercaseaux) added an 8-6 win over Brenton Bacon and Ricardo Hernandez at No. 1 doubles to earn the point.

Javier Tori led the Spartans during the singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Andrew Kam at No. 4 singles and sophomore Arnaldo Lovera (Caracas, Venezuela) added a 6-2, 6-0 win over Edson Lima at No. 6 singles to give Upstate a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Renzo Airaldi (Lima, Peru/Domingo Faustino Sarmiento) clinched the match with his 24th singles win of the year, with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Mikkel Muller at No. 3 singles.

Airaldi, who has 24 wins this season, is now alone in second place in wins in a single-season, just three shy of the school-record of 27 set by James Homan in 1991-92. He has six matches to break the mark.

After a loss at No. 5 singles, Roux added a win over Brenton Bacon, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles for his 15th singles win of the season to take a 5-1 lead. The match rounded out with an Eagles' win at No. 1 singles.

Upstate heads to Jacksonville, Fla., next weekend for Atlantic Sun Conference matches with North Florida on Friday at 2 p.m. and Jacksonville on Saturday at 10 a.m.
