After a distinguised playing career that included two all-conference awards, two CoSIDA/ESPN: The Magazine All-District honors and the first Division I national ranking in school history, Sandy Franz joins the Upstate tennis staff as a sudent assistant in 2009 while also serving as Upstate's Assistant Director of Marketing.
With an overall GPA of 3.778 as a marketing major, Franz earned ITA Scholar-Athlete, Atlantic Sun All-Academic and CoSIDA/ESPN: The Magazine All-District First Team honors as a senior and Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll and CoSIDA/ESPN: The Magazine Second Team honors as a junior.
Franz, an All-Atlantic Sun Conference First Team selection in 2008, led the men's tennis team into the Division I era, helping the Spartans to a 15-6 overall record and an 8-2 mark in the Atlantic Sun Conference, good for a third-place finish.
He finished the season 19-12 in singles play for the Spartans, playing in the No. 1 singles slot and added an 18-13 mark in doubles play. The 37 combined wins were ninth in school history. Although he had to fight injuries throughout the spring to his shoulder and his ankle, Franz had one of the most memorable falls in school history, helping him earn the school's first Division I national singles ranking, beginning the spring 96th in the ITA rankings. In the fall, Franz defeated two players ranked in the nation's top 100 in the ITA rankings and won tournament singles titles at the USC Fall Invitational (`A' Flight) and the USC Upstate Fall Tennis Tournament (`A' Flight). He also won a doubles title with Airaldi at the Upstate Fall Tournament as well and advanced to the doubles semifinals at the ITA Mideast Regionals.
Franz was a member of the All-Peach Belt Conference team in 2007. Franz led Upstate to a 23-5 overall record in 2007, good for a second-place finish in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, and a second straight trip to the NCAA Nationals. His 6-2, 7-5 singles victory and 8-4 doubles victory helped spur the Spartans out of the Round of 16 and into the quarterfinals of the tournament before Upstate was ousted by West Florida. Franz finished the year with a 20-3 singles record playing primarily at the No. 2 position where he was 15-3 on the year. He was a perfect 4-0 playing in the No. 1 spot and 1-0 at No. 4. He was also solid in doubles, finishing the year with a 18-5 record playing with three different partners throughout the season.
He finished his career ninth in singles wins with 44, sixth in doubles wins with 45 and fifth in combined wins with 99.
A native of Duesseldorf, Germany, Franz is completing his bachelor's degree in marketing.
