SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The USC Upstate men's soccer team signed seven student-athletes for the fall of 2010, head coach Greg Hooks announced today. Set to join the Spartans are Akin Adediji, Colin Marusak, James Hadley, Alex Nutley, Michael Rankin-Byrne, Jan Wienholt and Cody Zane.
"This group of players should meet our team's needs in terms of the losses that we had in losing players due to graduation," said Hooks. "All of these players are coming from successful programs and each one of them has received individual honors both on the field and in the classroom. I look forward to watching them develop into successful college soccer players and student-athletes."
Akin Adediji (Cedar Park, Texas/Vista Ridge HS) will join the Spartans after a standout prep career. Adediji played soccer for four years at Vista Ridge, where he made 64 career starts and recorded six goals and 24 assists. He split time on the junior varsity and varsity programs as a freshman before playing varsity his final three seasons.
As a freshman, Adediji helped lead his team to the Labor Day Championship (Sept. 1-3, 2007) and the team was a Texas HS 4-A Region 25 Finalist. He earned the team's MVP award as well as first-team all-conference and all-district accolades after leading the team to the Bi-District Championship and a third-place finish in the STYSA State Tournament. He played club soccer with the Lonestar Soccer Club.
Colin Marusak (Dallas, Texas/Naaman Forest HS) had an outstanding senior campaign to close out his high school career. Marusak, who started every game since early in his freshman season between the pipes, owned a .06 GAA and tallied eight regular season shutouts. He was selected as a team captain for his junior and senior seasons. The incoming Spartan earned first-team all-district honors in 2009 and 2010 as Naaman Forest earned playoff berths as district runner-ups. He also earned the newcomer of the year award after his first season of play.
Marusak played club soccer with the Dallas Texans Academy. In 2008, the club won the Dallas Cup and the Disney Championship before going on to claim the National Championship. The following season, the team repeated as Disney Champions and played in the Academy League finals.
James Hadley (Wymondham, Great Britain/Wymondham HS) will join the Spartans this fall after closing out a four-year career at Wymondham High School. Hadley earned the Sportsman of the Year award after his senior season. He participated in club soccer with the Dereham Town of the Ridgeons Premier League. With Dereham Town, he earned both the team's and manager's Player of the Year award after his final year with the club. He also played with the Norfolk U-18 club where he earned the GCSE Sportsman of the Year Award. Hadley also earned several other Player of the Year while playing youth soccer.
Alex Nutley (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Wando HS) will make the trip across the state as he joins Upstate this upcoming season. Nutley was a three-time letter winner at Wando High School. He was selected as a team captain for his senior season. Nutley also played basketball during his prep career.
Michael Rankin-Byrne (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls HS) will arrive in Spartanburg after a decorated high school career. The future Spartan began his high school career at Plymouth Regional High School in Plymouth, N.H., where he earned three letters as a starter on the varsity team as a freshman, sophomore and junior. He was also a starting guard on the junior varsity basketball team as a freshman and on the varsity squad during his sophomore and junior seasons at Plymouth.
Rankin-Byrne played his final season of soccer at Glens Falls High School where he earned both League and Section All-Star accolades and he was a finalist for the player of the year. He helped lead Glens Falls to the sectional finals after scoring three game winning goals in the playoffs. He was the team leader in goals scored and was second in the league.
He was a member of the Springfield Soccer Club in 2006 and 2007 before joining the Seacoast United Soccer Club in 2008 and 2009. He was a Super Y National ODP selection and was just one of five players chosen from the New England area. Rankin-Byrne finished his club career with the Black Watch Soccer Club.
He toured Ireland three times with Atlantic Crossing as the team competed in the Umbro Galway Cup. In 2007, the team finished fourth in the 16 team field after a record of 5-2. He served as a captain in 2008 when the team finished 4-3 overall. In his final trip with the team in 2009, the team posted a 2-3 mark. He also served as a volunteer coach and official for various soccer camps and recreational basketball and soccer leagues.
Jan Wienholt (Bocholt, Germany/Gymnasium HS) will join Upstate after earning four letters in soccer at Gymnasium High School. He earned all-district honors in each of his final three seasons with the team. Wienholt also played club soccer as he was a member of the VFL Soccer Club.
Cody Zane (Freedom, Maine/Rhode Island) will arrive in Spartanburg after a two seasons at the University of Rhode Island. As a freshman, he appeared in four games and made one start, which came against Boston University as he played all 90 minutes. During his sophomore season, Zane appeared in five contests for the Rams and made one start.
Zane was a four-year high school letter winner and as a junior he was a captain at Mount View High School and helped lead the team to the Eastern Maine Class B Quarterfinals. Zane played his senior season at North Yarmouth Academy, where he assisted in the teams run to the Western Maine Class C Semifinals.
Zane played in 64 games during his prep career and scored 18 goals while recording seven assists. He was named team MVP after his senior season and he earned All-Conference, All-County, All-Western Maine and All-State honors. He was a member of the Maine State Olympic Development Team and was a Region I ODP Pool Player. Zane was a starter for the USYSA Region I U-17 Regional Finalist Coastal Soccer Club.
