BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Richard Jata scored the game's only goal with 35 seconds remaining in the contest to lead Campbell to a 1-0 Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer victory over visiting USC Upstate Saturday at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Jata took a return pass from Josue Soto that split the Upstate back four and slotted the ball into the net past keeper Jason McCabe for the game-winning goal.
Campbell improves to 9-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 with 16 points in the A-Sun. Upstate falls to 3-11-0 overall and 3-4-0 with nine points in the league.
Camel keeper Aaron Johnson notched his second shutout of the year by making four saves. McCabe finished with three stops in the Upstate nets. USC Upstate dropped its second-straight contest after positioning itself in the top half of the league with wins over Lipscomb, Belmont and Gardner-Webb.
The Camels finished with a 9-7 edge in shots, while both teams had four attempts on goal.
Both teams had clear chances in both halves. In the 14th minute, Alex Garcev's shot was headed for the upper right corner of the net, but Johnson stretched to tip the ball beyond the post. Campbell's Vince Petrasso hit a shot from the top of the area in the 24th minute, but the ball sailed just high of the crossbar.
Johnson again preserved the scoreless game in the 36th minute when Carter Ridgeway dribbled into the box, but the junior keeper dove to his left to push the ball wide of the right post.
Jata nearly put Campbell ahead in the 73rd minute when Ben York's pass set up the junior behind the Upstate defense, but McCabe charged off his line and forced Jata's effort to sail over the bar. Less than two minutes later, Jack Burridge broke in on Johnson down the right side, but his shot at the back stick missed just wide left.
