MACON, Ga. - Phillip Calderon scored late in the first half to break a scoreless tie and the Mercer Bears went on to score a 3-0 victory over USC Upstate at Bear Field Thursday night.

Mercer improves to 6-9-0 overall and 2-5-0 with six points in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Upstate falls to 3-10-0 overall and 3-3-0 with nine points in the league. The Spartans will be back in action Saturday evening at 5:30 at Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C.

After playing most of the first half to a scoreless tie, Mercer knocked the ball around deep in Upstate territory before Vicente Arze collected the ball and played a pass to Calderon. Calderon fired a shot into the back of the net from 16 yards out to give Mercer a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute.

Upstate had thwarted a solid scoring chance for the Bears earlier in the half when a Mercer player headed the ball off of a cross. The shot went towards the upper left 90 where Alex Garcev was there to head the ball away to save a goal.

The teams battled in the second half, but neither team could get anything going offensively until the Bears put the game away in the 72nd minute. Ian Cameron took a corner kick and played a cross to the middle of the six-yard box where Bolade Dan Ogunmade headed the ball into the net for a 2-0 Bear lead.

Down 2-0, Upstate lost its focus and Mercer capitalized less than three minutes later when Arze stole a clearing pass deep in Upstate territory and hammered a shot into the net by a helpless Jason McCabe for a 3-0 lead.

Mercer did a solid job defensively to limit Upstate's opportunities. Bear keeper Roberto Cronenbold made just one save on the night, despite the Spartans taking seven shots. Mercer took 13 shots on the night and McCabe recorded three saves for Upstate.
