Radford, Va. - USC Upstate's entry into NCAA Division I men's soccer was not a pleasant one as the 30th-ranked Winthrop Eagles took a 5-0 victory over the Spartans Saturday afternoon in the RU Soccer Classic hosted by Radford University.
Daniel Revivo led Winthrop to the victory, scoring four goals in the game. Combined with the three goals he scored in the 2006 Big South Championship game hosted by Radford, he has scored seven goals in his last two matches played at Cupp Stadium.
Upstate came out and pressed early, sending a shot on goal in the first minute of the match. However, Winthrop countered and went on a two-on-one situation and Revivo put a shot by Spartan keeper Jack Stern in the fourth minute. Saidi Isaac delivered the pass to Revivo on the goal.
Revivo struck again in the 13th minute when he took a pass from Grant Wise and slid a roller into the goal for a Winthrop 2-0 lead. The Eagles added to the advantage in the 17th minute when Isaac went on a breakaway off a pass from Matthew Skonicki and put a shot into the lower right portion of the goal, just over a diving Stern.
Revivo scored his third goal of the game in the 40th minute when John Gilkerson's shot bounced off the post and fell at Revivo's feet. Revivo put the shot away in the open goal for a 4-0 Eagles lead.
Revivo scored his fourth goal of the game, and the last in the contest, in the 51st minute when he stole the ball from Stern and put the shot into the net to give Winthrop a 5-0 lead.
Winthrop took 17 shots in the game, placing five in the net and nine total on goal. Upstate took five shots in the game, putting three on goal. The Eagles took six corner kicks to the Spartans' two.
Upstate takes on host Radford Sunday afternoon at 3:30 in the final game of the RU Soccer Classic. Winthrop takes on Binghampton Sunday at 1:00.
