Spartanburg, S.C. - In a year when USC Upstate golfer Josh Gallman collected his fair share of accolades, the honors continue to roll in as the recent graduate has earned ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-District honors in the men's at-large selections release today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program is run CoSIDA and is the top Academic All-America program in college athletics. By earning first team all-district honors in District 3, Gallman will now be put in the pool for Academic All-America honors. Student-Athletes in 12 different sports (golf, fencing, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, wrestling and water polo) were eligible for the men's at-large teams and Gallman was the only student-athlete from the A-Sun to earn all-district honors.
Gallman has been a standout in the classroom throughout his four years. He finished his career with a 3.726 GPA. He was named Upstate's Male Student-Athlete of the Year for the second time in his career. He was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society/Fraternity for excellence in Upstate's George Dean Johnson, Jr., School of Business and received the Top Business Marketing Student Award. He was an honors graduate in the business major and earned four conference academic team honors.
Gallman's performance in the classroom mirrored that of his play on the golf course. He won three individual tournament championships in 2009-10, including the final tournament of his career at the Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State. He broke into the top 100 in the world amateur rankings by the R&A, moving to No. 62 in the world following his third-place finish at the A-Sun Championships and the win at the Fossum Invitational. He currently ranks 66th. He ranks 55th in the latest Golfstat Cup ranking.
Gallman finished his career as the owner of every one of Upstate's career and single-season school records. He owns the all-time marks with seven tournament wins, 21 top five finishes and 33 top 10 efforts. His 72.7 stroke average and .869 winning percentage are also career records at Upstate. His 71.4 stroke average this season is the top single-season average in school history, while his .938 winning percentage as a sophomore also tops the single-season list. His 66 in the second round of the Rutgers Invitational, which he won, is the lowest round in school history.
Gallman's selection as a first team academic all-district selection marks the fourth honor for Spartan student-athletes by ESPN The Magazine and CoSIDA this year. Men's basketball player Nick Schneiders was a first team academic all-district selection and went on to earn second team All-America honors. Baseball player Tyler Cook earned first team academic all-district honors and is awaiting the announcement for the All-America teams. Softball pitcher Morgan Childers was a second team academic all-district selection.
