Spartanburg, S.C. - USC Upstate standout golfer Josh Gallman can add another accolade to what has amounted to a stellar season in 2007-08, receiving First Team All-Conference honors in the Atlantic Sun Conference, the league announced today. Gallman, a sophomore from Gaffney, S.C., was one of five golfers named First Team All-Conference in the A-Sun. He joined East Tennessee State's Gareth Shaw, who was also named the conference's player of the year, Lipscomb's Cody Hale, Campbell's Fredric Sundberg and East Tennessee State's Rhys Enoch on the first team. "It's exciting that Josh has been honored as one of the best in the A-Sun," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "It is great that his efforts all year have been awarded. I believe his teammates would agree with me that he is well deserving of this honor. As a sophomore, he's already discussed with me his plans to work hard and improve for future years and that, too, is exciting." Campbell's Zac Drescher, North Florida's Michael O'Neal, East Tennessee State's Seamus Power and Kennesaw State's Michael Tulacz and Oliver West were named A-Sun Second Team All-Conference. ETSU's Enoch was a unanimous choice for selection to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team and was joined on the team by Campbell's Drescher, North Florida's Chris Kennedy, Florida Gulf Coast's Daniel Mazziota and Kennesaw State's Matt Nagy. North Florida's Scott Schroeder was named the A-Sun Coach of the Year after a standout season that culminated in the Ospreys winning the A-Sun Tournament. Gallman was simply outstanding in 2007-08. He finished second to teammate Michael Lawrence in the season-opening tournament, helping lead Upstate to the team championship at the Rutgers Invitational in the program's first tournament as members of NCAA Division I. In his next outing a week later, he turned in a 10-under-par performance to win the Sea Trail Intercollegiate. The win would be the first of four individual tournament titles in 12 tournaments this year for the player. He also won the Stetson/CFSC Invitational, the Lonnie D. Small Classic and the Samford Intercollegiate while finishing in the top 10 in 11 of the 12 tournaments he played. Remarkably, he also had eight top five performances, leading Upstate to top five finishes as a team in the same eight tournaments and winning two team championships. He was named the A-Sun Golfer of the Month three times this year, the most of any golfer in the conference. Gallman topped the Spartans and ranked second in the A-Sun with a 71.5 stroke average. He shot under-par in 19 of the 33 rounds he played and was at par or better in 22 rounds. He owned a head-to-head record of 927-61 on the year. He currently ranks 72nd in the nation in the latest GolfStat Cup ranking, tracking the best golfers in the collegiate ranks, regardless of division standing. No slouch in the classroom, Gallman carries a 3.8 GPA and was named the co-Male Student-Athlete of the Year at Upstate. |
