The second and third recipient of the Thomas L. Smith Memorial Scholarship was Bret Hansen. Bret was a outfielder from Charlotte, NC, where he played for Bob Rhodes at Olympic High School. Bret entered the program in the fall of 2003 as a walk-on and has had a significant impact on the program both on and off the field. An accounting major, Hansen presently holds a cumulative GPA above 3.0. Through hard work and dedication Bret has made himself into a solid baseball player and a model for those who follow.
As a freshman, Bret started 44 games and batted .253. He collected his first 2 collegiate base hits against Belmont Abbey on February 3, 2004. The day also included his first home run and his first two RBIs. He enjoyed 12 multi-hit games his freshman campaign, which was highlighted by a two-hit, three-RBI performance against Coker College.
As a sophomore, Bret got off to a quick start by going 6-for-11 with four doubles in a three game series against Bloomfield College. He had 19 multi-hit games in 2005 and enjoyed a career day against Shepherd College when he drove in seven runs. Hansen led the 2005 squad with 41 bases on balls and finished second on the team with a .467 on base percentage.
As a junior, Hansen hit .364 with five home runs and 52 RBIs. Hansen was undeniably one of the leaders of the program, and his play in center field helped the team to 33 wins. He made just three errors during the season and he scored 50 runs.
Hansen's career came to a sudden end during his senior year due to a violent outfield collision, but before the injury, Hansen led the Spartans with a .358 average, 63 hits, 41 runs, a homer and 42 RBIs. He also swiped a career-high 14 bases during the season. He finished his career second in school history in hits (240), third in runs (162) and fifth in doubles (50).
For his effort, hard work, and determination the USC Upstate Baseball Program is proud to award Bret Hansen with the Thomas L. Smith Memorial Scholarship.
