SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Freshman Trey Richardson (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) led the USC Upstate baseball team with three hits, a run, a double and two RBI on Wednesday night, but The Citadel posted 14 hits to down Upstate, 10-3, at Harley Park in non-conference action.
The Spartans (16-25 overall) cut into a 5-0 lead for the Bulldogs (31-20 overall) in the fourth inning, as sophomore Tyler Cook (Bloomington, Ill./University) led off by ripping a double to right center. After a groundout moved him to third, Cook scored on a single up the middle by Richardson. Richardson moved to second on a single by sophomore Austin Moyer (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) and then scored with two outs when junior Andre Harris (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.) reached on an error.
The Citadel got one of the runs back in the fifth inning thanks to a RBI single by Grant Richards, giving The Citadel a 6-2 lead. Upstate got the run back in the bottom of the inning, as Cook hit a high fly down the right field line landed in front of the diving outfielder for a double and Richardson ripped a two-out double to deep left-center to score Cook.
The Bulldogs scored four runs in the sixth, though, to break open the game thanks to four runs on four hits and an error, taking a 10-3 lead.
The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in both the first and third innings, with an unusual two-RBI sac fly from Bryan Atlman that sent Harris crashing into the center field wall after making a great catch highlighting the first inning and Kyle Jordan highlighted the third with an RBI double.
The Citadel took a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning as Grant Richards led off with a double and Brad Felder posted a two-out RBI single.
Richardson went 3-for-4 to lead Upstate's 12-hit attack and senior Brian Dempsey (Montverde, Fla./East Ridge) also went 2-for-4. Cook finished 2-for-5 with two runs and two doubles.
Jordan went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI and Richards went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI to lead the Bulldogs. David Greene and Nick Orvin also added two hits.
Matt Reifsnider (2-1) picked up the win for the Bulldogs, tossing 4 2/3 innings of relief, allowing seven hits and a run. He struck out five. Freshman Gaither Bumgardner (Fort Lawn, S.C./Great Falls) (0-6) took the loss for Upstate, allowing five earned runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked three.
Upstate gets back into action on Friday with its final Atlantic Sun Conference series of the year, as Kennesaw State comes to Harley Park for a 6 p.m. game to start the three-game set.
