CLINTON, S.C. - Despite opening up a 5-2 lead by the fourth inning, the USC Upstate baseball team fell victim to eight straight runs in a 10-7 loss to Presbyterian at the PC Baseball Complex on Tuesday in non-conference action. Senior Andrew Runion (Simpsonville, S.C./Mauldin) led the Spartans, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs to go with his ninth homer of the season.

Upstate (20-22 overall) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as sophomore Jimmy Tanner (Fayetteville, Ga./Stars Mill) singled up the middle with one out. He advanced around the bases on three wild pitches. Two Presbyterian errors looked like it would keep the rally alive, but Upstate was taken out of the inning thanks to two baserunners being called out on the same play.

Things kept going the Spartans way in the second inning when junior Tommy Shovlin (Merritt Island, Fla./Daytona Beach C.C.) robbed Casey Carlson of a home run, leaping at the left field fence and catching a ball headed for the shrubbery behind the fence.

Upstate scored two more runs in the third inning as Runion singled deep in the 5.5 home and junior Phillip Morgan (Campobello, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist) hit a ground-rule double to left field. After a strikeout, sophomore Brian Dempsey (Montverde, Fla./East Ridge) singled up the middle to score both runners.

The 3-0 lead was short-lived, as Drew Wingo hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning. However, two more runs crossed in the fourth inning, as Shovlin led off with a walk. Junior Eric Guillen (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks) followed with a single to right center and when the throw got out of the infield, Shovlin came around to score. A sac bunt moved Guillen to third where he scored on Tanner's groundout. The Spartans also got a chance at one more run, as Runion was cut out at home plate on a throw from Cory Lyda in center field on sophomore Jacob Breen's (Marietta, Ga./Birmingham Southern) single to right field.

The Blue Hose (12-26 overall) were able to control the rest of the game, getting two runs on two hits in the sixth to cut the lead to one run before adding three each in the seventh and eighth innings, using seven hits and one Spartan error.

Down 10-5 in the ninth inning, the Spartans got two runs back as Tanner singled to right center and Runion lined a homer over the left field wall.

Tanner went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI and both Dempsey and Shovlin also added two hits for the Spartans, who pounded out 12 hits in the game. Dempsey added two RBIs and Shovlin had a run.

Lyda went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, Robert Anders went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs, Steven Henry went 2-for-4 with a run and Zac Rhinesmith went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

Zach Snipes (2-3) earned the win for the Blue Hose, allowing three hits and two runs in five innings of relief. He walked two and struck out two. Sophomore Tyler Olliver (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) (1-3) took the loss, allowing two hits, a walk and three runs in 2/3 of an inning.

Upstate is back on the road on Wednesday for the second of five straight road games when it heads up I-85 for a 6 p.m. game at the Atlantic 10's Charlotte.
