BLACKSBURG, Va. - A three-run bases-clearing double from Anthony Sosnoskie in the bottom of the seventh inning helped lift Virginia Tech to a 5-3 win over the USC Upstate baseball team at English Field on Tuesday night, spoiling Upstate's bid for its first win in four tries against an Atlantic Coast Conference school. Upstate outhit Virginia Tech, 8-6, but seven Upstate walks led to four of Virginia Tech's runs.

The Spartans (7-14 overall) fell behind 2-1 in the second inning, but battle back with single tallies in the fourth and seventh innings to take a 3-2 lead before two walks and a bunt single was followed by Sosnoskie's blast to left center to give the Hokies (14-8 overall) a 5-3 lead.

Upstate scored a run in the top of the first as junior Jimmy Tanner (Fayetteville, Ga./Starr's Mill) singled through the left side and senior Phillip Morgan (Campobello, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist) reached on an infield single, setting up a dropped fly ball in shallow left field that scored Tanner.

The Hokies tied the game in the bottom of the inning, by scoring a run on a double from Austin Wates and then took the lead in the bottom of the second by using three walks and a hit batter to score a run.

Upstate stayed in the game, using a shutdown performance from senior Barrett Stover (Durham, N.C./Lenoir C.C.), who retired the side in the second through sixth innings, allowing just three hits and a walk in that stretch. Meanwhile, the Spartans tied the game in the fourth, as junior Jacob Breen (Marietta, Ga./Birmingham Southern) singled to right field to lead off and took second on a single from sophomore Keith Bisgounis (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo). After a flyout, Breen took third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice.

The Spartans snuck into the lead in the seventh inning, as freshman Jeff Medley (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) singled to lead off. He took second on a sac bunt, and after a groundout kept Medley at second, senior Kyle Simpson (Lyman, S.C./Byrnes) singled into right field to bring in Medley, giving Upstate it's brief 3-2 lead.

Stover (1-3) took the hard-luck loss, as he walked the first two in the seventh inning. He finished the game having thrown 4 1/3 innings, allowing three hits, three walks and two runs. Senior Phillip Myers (Louisville, Ky./Seminole C.C.) pitched two innings in relief of Stover, coming in after the second walk in the seventh, allowing two hits and one run. He struck out five, including the side in the seventh after the double.

Ben Rowen (2-0) earned the win in relief for the Hokies, tossing 1 1/23 innings, walking one and striking out one. Brandon Fisher earned his second save, pitching one inning and allowing a hit.

No Hokie had more than one hit, although Sosnoski delivered three RBI. Simpson and Bisgounis each finished 2-for-4 to lead the Spartans, with Simpson adding a RBI.

Upstate will host crosstown rival Wofford at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Harley Park. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 1400 AM in Spartanburg, the first baseball game in school history to be broadcast on the radio. It will also be streamed live on both (audio only) and at ASun.TV (video).
