Final Stats

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore Jeff Medley (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) led the USC Upstate baseball team with two hits on Tuesday night at Tennessee, but the Volunteers scored nine unanswered runs to down the Spartans, 9-1, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in non-conference action.

Upstate broke through first in the top of the first stanza, as freshman Brody Greer (Honea Path, S.C./Belton-Honea Path) drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on a single through the right side by senior Jimmy Tanner (Fayetteville, Ga./Starr's Mill). Greer slid in just ahead of the catcher's tag after a strong throw from mid-right field.

The Vols answered back with a pair of runs thanks to a pair of errors, a walk and a RBI single by Charley Thurber. Tennessee also added another run in the second thanks to an opposite field homer by Cody Stubbs, the first of his career. Tennessee scored five runs on six hits in the fourth inning to break open the game.

After the fourth inning, both teams struggled to score, stranding a combined four runners during the innings. Senior Brian Dempsey (Montverde, Fla./East Ridge) did provide a thrilling moment in the seventh inning when he laid out on a full extension to make a diving catch near the warning track down the right field line. He then got up and doubled off a Vols' runner at first.

Blake Forsythe added a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth to help UT take a 9-1 lead.

Forsythe led the Vols, going 2-for-5 with two runs, a homer and two RBI. Josh Liles also went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI to contribute to the Vols' 11-hit attack. Upstate was led by Medley, who went 2-for-4, as four other players posted a hit as well.

Rob Catapano (2-0) earned the win for the Vols, pitching four innings, allowing four hits, two walks and a run. He struck out three. Six more UT pitchers combined to throw the final five innings, allowing just two hits.

Freshman Gaither Bumgardner (Fort Lawn, S.C./Great Falls) (0-3) tossed two innings in the loss, allowing three hits, two walks and one earned run. He struck out two. Five more Upstate pitchers saw action in the game, as sophomore Robert Stegbauer (Hillsboro, Ohio/Lynchburg-Clay) and freshman Chris Knauff (Marietta, Ga./Walton) combined to throw 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits.

The Spartans get back into action on Wednesday with their first night game of the season at Harley Park as Gardner-Webb comes to town for a 6 p.m. tilt.
