SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Courtyard By Marriott Baseball Classic MVP Tyler Cook (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington) paced the USC Upstate baseball team with three hits, two runs and two RBIs to help Upstate cap off the classic with a 10-0 win over Butler to win the classic for the first time in its three years of existence. Cook hit .538 (7-for-13) with three runs and five RBI to pace the Upstate offense to an 8-5 win over Dayton on Saturday night, a 3-2 win over NJIT on Sunday morning and the win over Butler in the afternoon.
Upstate (6-2 overall) scored in five straight innings from the second to the sixth and never looked back, pounding out 15 hits en route to finishing the classic with a .330 team batting average. Cook was joined on the All-Classic Team by freshman Trey Richardson (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins), who hit .500 with four runs and three RBI, and junior Joe Barnes (Lake Orion, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.), who hit .462 with three runs and four RBI, during the three-game set.
Upstate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, as junior Andre Harris (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.) doubled with one out and scored on a two-out single up the middle from Barnes.
Two more runs crossed in the third, as sophomore Austin Liput (Oviedo, Fla./Trinity Prep) led off with a bunt single, moved to second on a groundout and reached third on an error that helped senior Jimmy Tanner (Fayetteville, Ga./Starr's Mill) reach first base. Richardson drove in Liput with a single down the line and Cook drove in Tanner with a single up the middle.
The Spartans added another tally in the fourth inning as Barnes walked, took second on a sac bunt by freshman Tyler Miller (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) and scored on an error after an infield single by freshman Brody Greer (Honea Path, S.C./Belton-Hones Path). Another run crossed in the fifth, as Richardson walked, took second on Cook's walk and third on Harris' hit by pitch, loading the bases. He scored on a wild pitch, giving Upstate a 5-0 lead.
The Spartans scored four more runs in the sixth to break open a 9-0 lead, scoring all the runs with two outs. Tanner started the rally with a single to left and Richardson followed with a walk. Cook drove in Tanner with a single to right center and Harris was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Freshman Gaither Bumgardner (Fort Lawn, S.C./Great Falls) followed with an infield single that scored Richardson and Barnes delivered a two-RBI single out to right center to plate two more runs.
Upstate scored its final run in the eighth inning, as Cook singled up the middle to lead off. After a fly out, a groundout moved Cook to second, where he scored on a single from Barnes.
Meanwhile, Upstate's pitching was solid, as sophomore starter Austin Moyer (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) improved to 1-0 after pitching six shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out five. Freshman Scott DeCecco (Cape May Courthouse, N.J./Middle Township) tossed two scoreless frames in his debut, allowing a hit and striking out two and sophomore Andrew Wyant (Newton, N.C./Fred T.
