SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Thanks to strong performances at Saturday's USC Upstate Invitational, Michael Meissner and Camille Masanotti have earned their first-ever Atlantic Sun Conference Athlete of the Week award, the conference office announced today.

"I am very proud of how hard these two athletes have been working and the result of their hard work is really starting to show," said head coach Jimmy Stephens. "They are performing strong at the right time, as the conference championships right around the corner. I am excited that they received this honor and I am even more excited to see what they can do in Jacksonville in the middle of May."

Michael Meissner (Cottage Grove, Minn./UW-River Falls) earned his first weekly award after two wins at the USC Upstate Invitational. Meissner won the 400-meter dash and eclipsed his own school record after posting a time of 49.14. He defeated a total of five competitors from the A-Sun in the event and his event time ranks as the second-fastest in the conference during the 2010 outdoor season.

Meissner picked up his second victory of the day as he ran the final leg of the 4x400 relay. The junior, along with teammates David Dennison (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle), Danny Moore (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) and Cameron Thomas (Niceville, Fla./Niceville) won the event with a time of 3:28.16. Even with an afternoon rain storm passing through, the quartet was just over a second off of their school record time that came at the Duke Invitational (3:27.05). Meissner also competed in the 200-meter dash on Saturday, where he finished in 22.54 for an 11th-place finish.

Camille Masanotti (Ladson, S.C./Stratford) earned her first weekly award and became the first freshman Spartan to win a women's weekly award. Masanotti won the pole vault at Saturday's USC Upstate Invitational. With a mark of 11-03.75 (3.45m), she shattered her previous program-record of 10-06.00 (3.05m), which came at the 49er Classic. Her mark of 11-03.75 (3.45m) is the fourth-best in the A-Sun this season.

Masanotti also competed in three other events at Saturday's meet. For the first time in the outdoor season, she competed in the high jump, long jump and the 100-meter hurdles. She finished ninth in both the high jump (4-09.00/1.45m) and the long jump (15-00.50/4.58m). Her mark of 4-09.00 (1.45m) places her 13th-overall in the conference. In the 100-meter hurdles, she finished fifth with a time of 16.75.

The Spartans are off from competition this weekend, but will return to action at the Orange & Purple Classic in Clemson, S.C. The two-day event held on May 7-8, will serve as Upstate's final tune-up prior to the A-Sun Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Fla. on May 14-15.
