SPARTANBURG, S.C. - For the first time in program history, the USC Upstate track and field team will hosting an invitational meet. This weekend's USC Upstate Invitational will begin on Friday and conclude on Saturday afternoon.
Four events will be held on Friday afternoon and will take place at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. Those events are the men's and women's hammer throw and the men's and women's javelin.
Saturday's events will be held at Spartanburg High School and the events will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the men's discus as well as the men's and women's long jump. Track events are scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. with the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
"We are very excited to be hosting our first invitational meet," said head coach Jimmy Stephens. "I definitely want to thank Spartanburg High School for allowing us to use their facility for this meet. They did a tremendous job in getting a top-notch facility that can host a multitude of events."
Joining Upstate this weekend are fellow Atlantic Sun Conference members ETSU and Campbell. Other schools slated to participate in this weekend's meet include Anderson University, King College, Lees McRae College, Methodist University, Milligan College, Morris College, Limestone College, Spartanburg Methodist College and Voorhees College.
"We have some really competitive heats and the events should be great," added Stephens. "There are some quality teams coming in and I am excited about this weekend's meet."
Following this weekend's meet, the Spartans will break for exams before returning to action on Friday, May 7, when they compete at the two-day Orange & Purple Classic in Clemson, S.C. That will be the final tune-up for Upstate prior to the following weekend's A-Sun Championships in Jacksonville, Fla.
