SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The USC Upstate track and field team will travel to Charlotte, N.C. for Saturday's Charlotte Invitational. It will be the second trip of the outdoor season to Charlotte and joining the Spartans at the meet will be fellow A-Sun member Campbell. The Spartans will be looking to repeat some of the magic from the last trip to the Queen City. At last month's 49er Classic, two Spartans won events and five new school records were set. It also led to Upstate claiming all four Atlantic Sun Athlete of the Week awards. Juniors Eric Chapman (Cowpens, S.C./Broome) and Gabrielle Walker (Chattanooga, Tenn./Mars Hill) claimed A-Sun Field Athlete of the week honors. Meanwhile, sophomore Jemeli Sang (Eldoret, Kenya/Biwott Ngelel-Tarit) and freshman Brandon Curry (Anderson, S.C./Pendleton) claimed the weekly track awards. Upstate also looks to continue its success after a strong showing at last weekend's Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C. Eight different Spartans won events and two new school records were set. David Dennison (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) set a new record of 1:57.28 in the 800-meter run. Dennison finished third-overall in the event. Also setting a new school mark, was LaTerrica Blocker (Stone Mountain, Ga./Redan). The junior won the 100-meter dash with her record setting time of 12.79. Following this weekend's Charlotte Invitational, Upstate will return to action next weekend when it hosts the USC Upstate Invitational on April 24, 2010. |
