When Broome High School graduate Eric Chapman visited the Atlantic Sun Conference Web site last week, he was startled by what he found on the home page.

Chapman and three of his USC Upstate teammates had swept the league track and field athlete of the week awards, marking the first time in school history that the Spartans had accomplished the feat.

"Nobody had told me anything about it," Chapman said. "I just happened to get on the A-Sun Web site and saw it. It was impressive. I was proud of the whole team."

Chapman and fellow junior Gabrielle Walker claimed the field awards while sophomore Jemeli Sang and freshman Brandon Curry earned the track awards.

"It just shows that our team is working really hard and stepping up when it comes time to compete," said head coach Jimmy Stephens, who started the USC Upstate track and field program from scratch three years ago.
