SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Head men's and women's track & field coach Jimmy Stephens announces the hiring of Eric Agnew, Timothy Smith and Bridget Posey as volunteer assistant track and field coaches at USC Upstate. Eric Agnew is in his first season as a track and field volunteer assistant coach for USC Upstate. He will assist in coaching the sprint events. Agnew comes to USC Upstate after spending time at Limestone College where he was an assistant coach for the cross country team from 2004-07. During his time at Limestone, he coached several runners that were named All-Region. From 2003-06, Agnew was an assistant track coach at Gaffney High School where he coached several runners that competed in the South Carolina 4A State Championships and qualified for the Nike Outdoor National meet. Agnew worked as an assistant coach for the Gaffney Elite Track Club from 1998-2007. During that time, he coached over 60 AAU national qualifiers and one AAU national champion in the 100 and 200 meters. He also was a coach with Cherokee Saint Track Club in 2005. A native of Gaffney, S.C., Agnew graduated from Gaffney High School in 1989 where he lettered twice in track and field and once in cross country. He attended Claflin College where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Physical Education in May 1994 and was a member of the Claflin track and field team, competing in the 400 meters and the 1600 meter relay.
Smith comes to USC Upstate after spending a year as a volunteer assistant coach for Clemson University. Before coming to Clemson, he spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Dorman High School in Spartanburg and has also been a coach for the West-Side Elite Track Club and the Spartanburg Striders Track Club. During his coaching career, Smith has coached 21 All-Americans, 10 All-State performers and four state champions. While at Dorman as the jumps coach, his jumpers several school records. Smith has also received certification as a national official by USA Track and Field (USATF) and is a USATF Level 1 Certified Track Coach in jumps, sprints, throws and hurdles. He has also received a Sports Science Certification from Georgia. A native of Jonesville, S.C., Smith graduated from Jonesville High School in 1995 and lettered for four years in football, track, baseball and basketball. He holds records in the 300 and 400 meter hurdles and was named MVP his senior year.
Posey comes to USC Upstate after serving as an AAU/USATF coach for many years including six years of coaching for the Spartanburg Striders Track Club. She has coached several runners who advanced to the AAU/USATF Junior Olympics. A native of Cowpens, S.C., Posey graduated from Broome High School and attended Charleston Southern University where she graduated in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in Business Management and competed on the track and field and cross country teams. She earned Big South All-Conference honors in the 200 meters, 400 meters, 4 x 100 meter relay and 4 x 400 meter relay. She was also named Team MVP. |
