CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Sophomore distance runner Carolyne Chelulei won the 3000-meter run in record-setting fashion at Saturday's Charlotte Invitational. Chelulei won the event with a time of 10:13.74 which is nearly 20 seconds ahead of the school record that was set by teammate Jemeli Sang at the 2009 49er Classic.
USC Upstate claimed two other top performances in the 3000-meter run. Jemeli Sang finished in second-place with a time of 10:15.94, while Mary Alexander finished fifth (10:50.17). In the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, Lauren Walker raced to a second-place finish. The sophomore posted a time of 11:57.45. Laura Transue finished third in the event after a time of 13:14.31.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Kathryn Neely finished fifth with a time of 16.45. Meanwhile, Erica Farler finished eighth with an event time of 20.50. The women's 4x100 meter relay team finished in third-place after a time of 51.41. LaTerrica Blocker ran the first leg and was followed by Camille Masanotti, Gabrielle Walker and Kathryn Neely.
In the 3000-meter run, James Jackson raced to a fifth-place finish. The sophomore finished the event with a time of 9:22.58. Meanwhile, Matt Henderson finished fifth in the 5,000-meter run after a time of 16:18.02.
In the men's 400-meter dash, Michael Meissner finished seventh after recording a time of 49.87. Meanwhile, in the 800-meter run, Cameron Thomas finished 11th with a time of 1:59.44. Dustin Thomas (2:16.22) and Dylan Taylor (2:17.27) finished 22nd and 24th, respectively.
In the 1,500-meter run, David Dennison finished eighth after a time of 4:03.39. Dustin Thomas recorded a 17th place finish with a time of 4:30.72 and Dylan Taylor finished in 4:36.20 en route to a 19th-place finish. Christian Ritacco finished fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:05.24.
Abigail Osborne posted two top-10 finishes on Saturday afternoon. In the high jump, the freshman finished fourth after recording a mark of 4-11.00 (1.50m). Osborne finished ninth in the pole vault after clearing a height of 9-00.25 (2.75m). Camille Masanotti also competed in the pole vault, finishing fifth after clearing a height of 10-06.00 (3.20m).
Four different Spartans competed in the long jump at the Charlotte Invitational. Gabrielle Walker finished 13th after a mark of 15-02.25. LaTerrica Blocker finished 14th as she posted a mark of 14-07.25 and was followed by Christian Gamble who finished 15th (13-09.50). Erica Farler was the final Spartan to compete in the event and finished 16th after a mark of 13-01.25.
Upstate will return to action next Saturday when it hosts the lone home outdoor meet of the season, the USC Upstate Invitational.
