Men's soccer player Troy Simon has been named the SunCom Wireless Spartan of the Week after leading Upstate to a pair of A-Sun wins last week. A native of Freeman's Village, Antigua, Simon finished the week with a goal and two assists. He led the Spartan attack Friday night in the Lipscomb game, setting up a pair of goals. He assisted on Jack Burridge's second goal of the match. He made a move on his defender at midfield and created a 2-on-1 opportunity. He drew the keeper to the ball and slid a pass to Burridge who put the shot away for a 2-0 Upstate lead. With the Spartans clinging to a 3-2 lead late in the game, he played a perfect cross to David Acosta in front of the net and Acosta put the shot away for the 4-2 win. In Sunday's game against Belmont, Simon saw a 1-0 Upstate lead go to a 2-1 deficit late in the game. After Landon Fruge' tied the game for the Spartans, Simon took a cross and pounded a shot in from 22 yards out into the upper right 90 to give Upstate the 3-2 win. Simon currently sits tied atop the Upstate scoring list with six points on two goals and two assists. He missed all but four games last year with a torn ACL. Previous Entries |
