Softball player Morgan Childers has earned her first weekly honor by the athletics department, claiming SunCom Wireless Spartan of the Week accolades. Childers, a freshman from Kings Mountain, N.C., earned the honor after leading Upstate to three wins at the Tar Heel Invitational last weekend. She tossed a two-hit, complete game shutout of Lafayette in the tournament opener, finishing the game with 12 strikeouts Saturday. Later in the day, she entered the game game with James Madison in the bottom of the seventh to finish off the Dukes and earn her first collegiate save. She struck out two in the inning to preserve the 7-5 win. In the tournament finale for Upstate Sunday against Princeton, she went the distance in eight innings to earn the 6-2 win over the Tigers. She allowed two solo home runs, but only allowed three other hits in the game while striking out nine. Childers currently leads the team in wins, ERA, complete games, shutouts and an A-Sun leading opponent's batting average. She struck out a program record 18 batters in her collegiate debut against Tusculum on Feb. 13. Previous Entries |
