1983

Doug Lightbody is the ninth person from the men's basketball program to be inducted into the USC Upstate Athletics Hall of Fame and the fifth member from the 1982 NAIA National Championship team to enter the Hall.

Lightbody was a key role player on the men's basketball team throughout his four years in the program. He was named the team Defensive Player of the Year for the 1982-83 season.

He helped lead the then-Rifles to back-to-back NAIA District Six titles and appearances in the NAIA National Tournament in 1981 and 1982. He was a starter on the 1982 team that claimed the NAIA National Championship, averaging 7.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. He also averaged nearly two assists per game.

Perhaps his best performance came in the National Championship game when he finished with 12 points as one of two Rifles to finish in double figures in the game.

For his career, Lightbody played in 111 games, scoring 713 points and grabbing 297 rebounds. It should be noted that blocked shots and steals were not kept on a regular basis during the period in which Lightbody played. He averaged 6.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game on a team that contained several high-scoring players (Michael Gibson, Wendell Gibson, and James Holland) who went on to play professionally.

Lightbody was also a standout in the classroom, earning Academic All-District honors all four years.

Lightbody graduated from USCS in 1984 and earned his master's degree in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1991. He and his wife, Elizabeth, who was also a student at USCS, have been married for 22 years. They have four children: Trevor, Carly, Madison, and Skyler. Lightbody is the Vice President in the Sales Marketing Division of Dixie Narco, a manufacturer of vending machines. He and his family live in Aiken, S.C.
