Morgan Childers struck out 16 and Upstate turned in a pair of strong all-around performances to sweep the competition with a pair of shutout in the Spartans' first day of the Winthrop/adidas Invitational Saturday at the Winthrop Softball Complex. Upstate claimed a 2-0 win over Hartford behind the dominant pitching of Childers in the first game, while the Spartans 8-run-ruled Winston-Salem State in six innings to win the second game of the day.

Senior Jimmy Tanner wrapped five hits on Saturday during the USC Upstate baseball team's Atlantic Sun Conference-opening doubleheader against Florida Gulf Coast University, becoming the eighth player in school history to reach 200 career hits and leaping all the way to fifth in the category by the end of the day at Harley Park, but the Spartans fell to FGCU, 20-11, in the completion of Friday's suspended game before falling, 10-9, in the nightcap. After starting the season 2-4, the USC Upstate men's tennis team has rebounded much as has been expected off them for much of the past decade. Built into a regional Division II power under Tami Matheny and then continued to a national Division II contender under Coach Alessandro De Marzo before transitioning to Division I in 2008, the 2010 team has left its first similar mark to those previous teams, winning its 10th match of the year for the 10th straight season, 5-2, over Loyola Marymount at the LMU Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon. It certainly wasn't a cake walk in the final round, but USC Upstate got inspired play from Brian Horton and Josh Gallman and held off the competition to win the Palmas Del Mar Collegiate Classic Wednesday afternoon. Horton, who shot a 67 in the final round, stormed into a share of the individual title with teammate Josh Gallman.
